The days of slow internet, pagers, and compact discs are long gone.
Everything around us is moving so quickly that it often feels overwhelming when we think about it all.
Rather than forcing ourselves to keep up, becoming stressed over things beyond our control, the best thing to do is simplify it all.
Remember, simple doesn’t mean easy, but it does mean thinking outside the box.
While I can’t control the technology that’s constantly changing or the incredible access to information, I can control what to participate in.
What many of us have forgotten is that we always have a choice. Of course, at times it doesn’t feel like we do because many things seem mandatory, but we can always choose what we do.
One of the ways I’ve dealt with technology is taking advantage of the tools and resources that make my job easier.
I appreciate that it’s easier than ever to connect with people all over the world. I’m thankful that news reaches us sooner than it did before. Mostly, I’m thankful for the tools that have allowed me to be a better parent in my home.
As my children have grown older, I’ve had to figure out ways to tame the chaos in our home. Our schedules have gotten more hectic, but there are some things we’ve focused on as a family that aren’t negotiable.
We focus on staying as healthy as possible and training the children for their lives away from home. This means we cook and eat at home as often as possible; we also eat as many meals together as possible.
Everyone also goes to bed at a reasonable time. Even though my children are entering their teen years, we still focus on them getting at least eight hours of sleep. As for the adults, we’re in bed by ten o’clock because we understand that our brains need rest even if our bodies don’t.
This has also spread to other areas of our lives. I’ve learned to automate our responsibilities. For instance, bill paying, groceries, and scheduling is done once or twice a month. I have systems set up so that I don’t have to waste time figuring out what’s for dinner or which child needs to be where on a certain date.
It seemed a natural progression to turn our home into a smart home as well. Learn here if you’d like to build more margin in your life. It’s amazing how much more you can do when certain decisions are already taken care of.
I highly recommend figuring out what works for your family.
